About a third of homes in Delaware County (34%) were built before 1950, and 31% are attached rowhomes and twins (U.S. Census). Older, attached homes make it easier for mice, German cockroaches and bed bugs to move between neighbors.
Glen Mills and Garnet Valley are newer. The typical home there was built in the mid-1990s. Penn State Extension notes termite problems usually show up 10 years or more after construction, and wooded lots bring ants, carpenter bees and hornets.
The Delaware County Health Department reported 57 West Nile virus-positive mosquito samples countywide in 2025. In2Care mosquito stations help cut down mosquitoes in your yard.
The county's tick surveys have collected blacklegged (deer) ticks at parks including Smedley, Ridley Creek, Glen Providence and Newlin Grist. Our tick service is seasonal, so text us in the spring.
